01

What changed in hotel discovery

Hotels have traditionally relied on OTA listings, TripAdvisor rankings, and direct marketing to drive discovery. These channels still matter. But AI search has added a new first step: millions of travellers now open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI to ask which hotel to book before they visit any booking site. A couple planning a honeymoon asks AI for the most romantic resorts in the Maldives. A corporate travel manager asks which hotel in Dubai is best for a team of executives. A wellness traveller asks for the best spa retreat in Bali. In all three cases, the AI answer shapes the consideration set before a single OTA is opened.
02

How travellers use AI to find and compare hotels

Travellers use AI at three stages of the hotel selection process. At the inspiration stage, they ask for shortlists: “Best boutique hotels in Paris.” At the comparison stage, they ask occasion-specific questions: “Is [Hotel A] better than [Hotel B] for a romantic anniversary?” At the validation stage, they ask trust questions before booking: “Is [Hotel name] as good as its reviews say?” Each stage requires different content. Shortlisting rewards broad brand authority. Comparison rewards specific occasion content. Validation rewards review velocity and award recognition.
03

What AI engines cite when recommending hotels

AI engines cite hotels based on a combination of trust signals and structured content. The strongest hotel citation predictors are: high-volume, high-recency reviews on TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, and Booking.com; mentions in luxury travel media (Condé Nast Traveller, Forbes Travel Guide, Lonely Planet); award recognition (Forbes Travel Guide stars, Relais and Chateaux membership, Travellers Choice); and occasion-specific structured content that directly answers the buyer questions travellers ask AI. Hotels that rely solely on OTA presence without these signals are consistently underrepresented in AI citation.
04

Occasion-specific content strategy for hotels

The biggest structural gap in hotel AI visibility is the lack of occasion-specific content. A hotel that serves honeymoon couples, business travellers, families, and wellness seekers needs separate AI visibility strategies for each buyer type. A generic property page that mentions all these use cases performs poorly in all of them. The hotels that dominate AI citation in specific occasion categories have dedicated, structured content answering the specific questions buyers ask for that occasion. A honeymoon page that answers questions about romance, privacy, dining, and in-room amenities will consistently outperform a generic luxury page in honeymoon AI queries.
05

Review velocity and trust signal management

Review platform velocity is one of the most controllable AI citation factors for hotels. AI engines weight recency heavily. A hotel with 200 TripAdvisor reviews averaging 4.7 stars but the last review dated 6 months ago will underperform versus a competitor with 80 reviews but 5 new reviews in the past 30 days. Active review management — soliciting recent reviews, responding publicly to all reviews, and monitoring review velocity — is among the highest-return AI visibility actions for hotels. The review solicitation flow should be automated and run for every checked-out guest within 48 hours.
