1,727 TripAdvisor reviews. Rated 4.9/5. Ranked #5 of 372 hotels in Lisbon. Guests use the word "honeymoon" in dozens of reviews. And yet — absent from AI recommendations for every romantic hotel query we tested.
We ran the specific query a honeymooner or romantic traveller would put to AI today — on five platforms, at the same time, from the same location signal (UK user, Lisbon destination).
Tested across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overview, and Google AI Mode. Secondary queries also tested: "most romantic hotel in Lisbon," "boutique hotel Lisbon honeymoon," "intimate hotel Alfama district."
Across all five channels, the properties that appeared most frequently: Bairro Alto Hotel, Torel Palace, Memmo Príncipe Real, Pestana Palace Lisboa. All have structured editorial coverage on occasion-specific queries (romance, honeymoon) in sources AI uses — Time Out Lisbon, Condé Nast Traveller, The Telegraph Travel's Lisbon guides.
Santiago de Alfama has strong, consistent, and occasion-specific guest evidence. The volume and specificity is unusual for a 15-room boutique property.
All guest evidence sourced from public platforms (TripAdvisor, Booking.com, editorial publications) at the time of research. AI output varies and was observed across multiple sessions; results shown reflect consistent patterns, not single queries.
This is the baseline — what AI currently returns when the traveller asks the question. This is what the next honeymooner sees before they ever visit the hotel's website.
| AI Channel | Status | What appears instead |
|---|---|---|
ChatGPT |
Absent | Bairro Alto Hotel, Torel Palace, Memmo Príncipe Real consistently appear. Sources cited include Time Out Lisbon and Condé Nast Traveller. |
Perplexity |
Absent | Pestana Palace Lisboa and Bairro Alto Hotel feature prominently. Perplexity pulls heavily from editorial listicles for occasion queries. |
Gemini |
Absent | Torel Palace and As Janelas Verdes appear. Gemini's romantic hotel recommendations for Lisbon draw from travel editorial with structured romance categorisation. |
Google AI Overview |
Absent | Pulls from Time Out Lisbon "Most Romantic Hotels" guide. Santiago de Alfama is not on that list. Three competitors are. |
Google AI Mode |
Weak | Appears in general Alfama district context, not in romantic hotel shortlists. Not surface-level recommended for the occasion query. |
The gap is specific and traceable. It is not about the hotel's quality — the guest evidence is exceptional. It is about a single editorial layer that AI draws on for occasion-specific queries.
Time Out Lisbon's "Best Romantic Hotels" guide is a primary source for romantic hotel queries across all four AI platforms. It features Pestana Palace, Torel Palace, Memmo Príncipe Real, Altis Belém and others. Santiago de Alfama does not appear.
When AI answers "best romantic boutique hotel in Lisbon," it draws on editorial sources that have categorised properties by occasion. The hotel is listed in Fodor's and AFAR, but neither source structures the listing around the romance or honeymoon occasion in a way AI associates with the specific query.
No dedicated romance or honeymoon landing page exists on the hotel's website — meaning there is no structured content AI can associate with occasion queries. AI systems increasingly use hotel website content as a signal when forming specific occasion recommendations.
No LodgingBusiness JSON-LD schema is implemented. Schema with occasion associations (“honeymoon”, “romantic getaway”, “anniversary stay”) would signal to Google's AI systems the occasions this property serves.
Guest reviews using occasion language ("honeymoon," "anniversary," "romantic") exist in volume, but hotel responses do not use occasion language in return. AI systems increasingly parse management responses as a signal for categorising properties. A systematic response template that anchors the occasion — "We're so glad Santiago de Alfama was part of your honeymoon" — builds a structured occasion association across hundreds of review responses.
This is an indicative estimate based on publicly available data. It illustrates the order of magnitude — not a guarantee.
These are the specific actions that address the traceable gaps above. Each targets a different layer of the evidence environment AI draws on.
/honeymoon-lisbon/ — a landing page that uses the occasion language AI associates with this query category. Implement LodgingBusiness JSON-LD schema with explicit occasion associations ("honeymoon," "romantic getaway," "anniversary"). This gives AI systems a direct, structured signal from the hotel's own domain. The page should surface guest language, itinerary suggestions and what makes the Alfama district setting specific to a romantic stay.Santiago de Alfama is not failing by any traditional measure. It is outperforming nearly every boutique hotel in Lisbon by the metrics that matter: guest satisfaction, review volume, editorial credibility. The gap is not a quality problem.
The gap is specific: the occasion and identity language that exists abundantly in guest reviews is not present in the editorial layer AI uses to form its recommendations for that occasion. The hotel's honeymoon evidence is locked in TripAdvisor — the right platform, but not the right form for AI to associate it with the specific query.
That is a traceable, fixable problem. Three interventions, across three different layers of the evidence environment, would change what AI says when the next couple asks where to spend their honeymoon in Lisbon.
"The hotel has 1,727 reviews saying honeymoon and still does not appear in the AI romantic hotel list. The evidence exists. The AI association does not. That is the gap Cited exists to close."
